Corrective Exercise
Helping people to move better, in every day life.
As a qualified Corrective Exercise Specialist, I am able to offer
consultations to people experiencing movement problems or discomfort
during everyday life or while exercising.
The role of a Corrective Exercise Specialist
Corrective Exercise Specialists assess and evaluate a client's musculoskeletal system for soft tissue and movement restrictions, imbalances, habitual patterns, and muscle dysfunction that may affect that person's ability to move well, exercise effectively and/or perform daily activities.
This specialised knowledge, regarding the musculoskeletal system, helps Corrective Exercise Specialists design and implement corrective exercise programmes to assist clients in beginning, resuming and/or continuing a fitness programme, without experiencing muscle and joint pain, or movement limitations.
What is corrective exercise?
Corrective exercise is a type of physical activity that is designed to improve your body mechanics, movement patterns, joint function and imbalances. It pulls from our knowledge of anatomy, physiology and biomechanics, to help identify the root cause of your movement dysfunction and then create a plan to correct it.
Why might corrective exercise be important?
Unfortunately, we live in a world where a decrease in activity and poor movement can lead to muscle dysfunction, injury, biomechanical stress and physiological stress.
Chronic musculoskeletal imbalances can affect the health and condition of all the body's structures including the bones, muscles, fascia, tendons and ligaments.
Who can corrective exercise help?
People with:
-
Stiffness/discomfort caused by sedentary lifestyle.
-
Workers with very physically demanding roles (e.g. carrying, lifting etc).
-
People who stand all day.
-
People who sit all day.
-
Those concerned about inflexibility.
-
Anyone whose job/lifestyle involves repetitive activity.
The corrective exercise process
1. Identify any neuromuscular skeletal dysfunction through movement screening.
2. Following analysis of the results, develop a personalised action plan.
3. Implement and deliver a corrective exercise strategy.
4. Reassess progress periodically.
What are the benefits of corrective exercise?
-
Ability to move better/more freely.
-
Reduced musculoskeletal aches and pains.
-
Improved posture.
-
Reduced injury risk.
-
Deeper understanding of your body.
Step 1 - Initial movement and screening assessment - your analysis
This is to determine if muscle dysfunction is present. Some clients may not require any further action. £50 (45 minutes to 1 hour).
Step 2 - Implementing the corrective exercise strategy/programme - your remedy
If a requirement for corrective exercise is identified, next steps are an appointment to start work on rectifying the muscle dysfunction. This is achieved by stimulating (myofascial release), lengthening (stretching) and activating (strengthening) certain muscles.
Post-analysis meeting, exercise plan and review meeting £150 (includes all 3 sessions).
Additional sessions will be agreed with each client and priced accordingly.
Important notes
As a Corrective Exercise Specialist we do not treat a medical diagnosis, physical trauma, or specific injury (e.g. Achilles tendonitis, rotator cuff tear, or post-surgery rehabilitation) or orthopedic conditions (e.g. arthritis, joint replacement, bursitis). We may refer you to a medical professional if we suspect a different form of treatment is required.
